| My
name is Mel Thomason I am the puppy/beginner
class trainer at Ely Dog Club. I am a qualified Veterinary Nurse and
currently
work nights at a referral hospital looking after dogs and cats with a
variety
of problems. I currently have three dogs of my own who are all rescue
cross
breeds, they have all achieved the Kennel Club Good Citizen Gold award.
They
all have very different personalities and have taught me a lot about
training
different breeds. I have always had a passion for dogs and enjoy
helping other
people get the best out of their dogs. I have attended many courses on
dog
training and am currently classed as a member of the Kennel Club
Accredited
Instructor course working towards full accreditation. I aim to make
classes fun and educational, working with modern positive methods. I
also do
private one to one training work in real life situations, eg helping
with dogs
that pull on walks and recall problems.
Puppy home visits are another service I provide, helping with toilet
training, chewing etc and getting started on basic early training. |

‘Don’t get a Beagle’.
‘You can’t train a Beagle’. These
were the words on everyone’s lips before the arrival of my first Beagle,
Harry. As a child I grew up with a
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Dillon – it took 12 years of nagging/wishing/praying before I was finally allowed a dog, I have a passion for
dogs but my parents were never keen on the idea.
So, after leaving home I got my own dog, Harry the Beagle. I
researched Beagles extensively before
choosing him so I was prepared for the ever-so-naughty Hound
ways. I disagree with people when they say you
can’t train a Beagle, you just need to know how! I have
never looked back since and now have
two! Harry has taught me so much about
training, and most importantly, patience.
I have attended many workshops/courses, with and without
Harry. If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be at
Ely
& District Dog Training Club and all 3 of us wouldn’t be
enjoying Tuesday
evenings as much as we do now. I am an ADTB qualified dog trainer as
well as a
member of the Kennel Club Accredited Instructor Scheme and have also
completed
the Animal Aiders Canine First Aid Course.
I currently teach the junior and
intermediate class using reward based techniques. I like my
classes to be light-hearted and
educational. If the owners are learning,
feel relaxed and enjoying themselves, it goes without saying the dogs
will be
too! |
